Also known as the Valley of Lys, this valley derives its name from the Lys River and is renowned as the longest valley in the Aosta Region. Along your journey through this unique part of the Italian Alps, you’ll savor the beauty of Donnas’ vineyards, experience the charm of authentic mountain villages, witness massive glaciers, and revel in the breathtaking vistas of Monte Rosa.

  • Donnas Vineyards: Begin your hike with a delightful stroll through the vineyards of Donnas, where you can appreciate the lush landscapes and perhaps even sample some local wines.

Expect to hike approximately 8-15 kilometers per day, with an elevation gain of up to 1300 meters. This tour is tailored for hikers with a moderate level of experience. Daily distances are manageable, and you’ll only need to carry a daypack.

Throughout this hiking adventure, your accommodations will be in cozy, mountain refuges. The welcoming local hosts will ensure you feel right at home. In the evenings, savor traditional dishes and delicacies, complemented by a wide selection of local wines available for your sampling.

Accommodations will typically consist of shared rooms, many of which include private bathrooms for your convenience.

The group dynamic adds an extra layer of enjoyment, providing a supportive and motivating atmosphere that’s perfect for creating lasting memories.

Expert Local Guide: To enhance your hiking experience, you’ll be accompanied by an expert local guide who knows the area like the back of their hand. They will not only lead the way but also provide valuable insights into the region’s history, culture, and natural wonders. Having a guide ensures that you get the most out of your journey, making it both educational and safe.

This comprehensive package includes half-board with breakfast, a packed lunch to take with you on your hikes, and a three-course dinner every evening. Rooms are shared according to gender, but upgrades to single rooms may be possible upon request. You’ll also receive maps and the convenience of luggage transport from one cabin to the next, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the magnificent surroundings.

Note: This tour has a minimum of four participants. To participate in this tour, you will pay a deposit to secure your spot. If we do not manage to reach the minimum requirement six weeks before departure, your deposit will be returned six weeks before departure or you may chose a different tour option with Outdoor Europe.

Jour 1 : Arrivée

Immerse yourself in a past characterized by the profound bond between man and the environment, discover the life of mountain people through the same paths that industrious and ingenious people have been able to trace over time. Discover the surprising nature at the foot of Monterosa and the historical and cultural heritage that characterizes it.

Day 2: LaGruba-VillaFridau

Official entry into the land of the Walsers: It is enough to admire the architecture to be sure of it. The houses and the nature shaped by rural activities are witnesses to this age-old culture that you have already seen along the descent of the beautiful Vallone (deep valley) of Loo. Monte Rosa, in all its splendor, also welcomes you.
Villa Fridau (1380m)

Day 3: VillaFridau-Wongade

This is the stage which makes it possible to reach the foot of Monte Rosa via gentle ups and downs and by crossing numerous small villages of Walser origin. Up here you will overnight in an original walser house.

Day 4: Wongade-OrestesHuette

The initial steep climb gradually becomes gentler and leads to the beautiful Gabiet basin where you can enjoy an unmissable panorama of the main peaks of Monte Rosa such as Lyskamm and Castore. You skirt the artificial basin and continue until you reach the foot of the glacier in the modern OrestesHuette refuge.
Rif. Orestes Hütte (2610m)

Total immersion in the nature of high altitudes: you are almost certainly going to meet marmots, ibexes and chamois, and the slopes that precede the ice are those on which the arthemisia glacialis is collected, the plant with which the traditional liqueur known as genepy is produced.
