Learn ski touring in Maira Valley*. Outdoor Italy is now launching a Ski Touring Camp in Val Maira, a stunningly beautiful and unspoilt valley in southwestern Piedmont. Here are neither ski lifts nor mass tourism, and due to the relatively soft terrain, Maira Valley is a paradise for ski touring enthusiasts. At this camp you will learn basic touring techniques and avalanche safety, and when the week is over, the goal is that you will be able to go on touring adventures yourself!

This tour is aimed at medium to experienced skiers who can easily navigate black slopes and who are otherwise in good shape. Because remember that in ski touring you go up the mountain yourself. Therefore, it is also harder than regular alpine skiing. On the other hand, the experiences are always greater.

Every day we go on new touring adventures with our internationally certified guides who have prepared a strong teaching program that is woven into the daily tours. The program includes i.a. following:

• Basic ski touring technique and touring equipment: different types of skis, boots, skins etc.
• Overview of different types of safety equipment
• Preparing for your trip: tactical tips, sources and interpretation of data and maps
• Interpretation of snow, weather and other significant conditions
• Basic rules for search & rescue
• Practical exercises

Although more and more ‘safe’ routes are being opened around the Alps, safety and respect for the mountains are absolutely crucial in ski touring. Therefore, the knowledge you gain from this course is a very basic prerequisite for being able to move freely around the terrain on a pair of touring skis.

When the day is over, we go back to our cozy hotel, where the food is top class – and there is a lot of it. We live in rooms with two to four beds, and there is a well-stocked bar where we can hang out and talk about the day’s adventures for the small hours – if we can otherwise stay awake.
